Bembridge Harbour

Mr Andrew Turner: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what recent representations he has received on the future of Bembridge Harbour. [46313]

Mike Penning [holding answer 14 March 2011]: Since May 2010, we have received four representations on the future of Bembridge Harbour. A number of representations have also been addressed to officials.

Ports: Bankruptcy

Mr Andrew Turner: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what responsibilities he has with respect to the operation of ports and harbours which enter into bankruptcy. [46314]

Mike Penning [holding answer 14 March 2011]: The Secretary of State has no general powers to intervene in the business activities of ports. The Secretary of State would consider what action to take in the event of a port or harbour's bankruptcy given individual circumstances and having regard to the legislation applicable to that port or harbour.

Bembridge Harbour

Mr. Andrew Turner: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport pursuant to the answer of 13 September 2006, Official Report, column 2262W, on Bembridge harbour, what steps he has taken to secure compliance with the statutory requirement that accounts of the Bembridge harbour improvement company be lodged annually with his Department. [93126]

Dr. Ladyman: The Department has written to the Bembridge harbour improvements company reminding it of its obligations under the Act .

Mr. Andrew Turner: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the requests (a) sought from and (b) granted by his Department for ministerial permission and approvals under the Pier and Harbour Order (Bembridge Harbour) Confirmation Act 1963 in each year since 1997. [38160]

Dr. Ladyman: Responsibility for navigational consents under local legislation has rested with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs since October 2004. Prior to that date and since 1997 the Department has no record of any permissions sought or approvals given under the 1963 Act.
